Friday tunes 14

It's been some relaxed listening this week

Fink – Biscuits For Breakfast  - dude with a guitar and a sweet voice, supplied to you by Ninja Tune. Truly excellent (Cheers KB)
Mélanie Pain – My Name Anglo-French singer from Caen with a voice that could melt butter. Great rendition of Blur’s “Girls And Boys”. Playing at the Jazz Café tonight.

Gomez – A New Tide Think Beck and folk
TM Juke – Maps From The Wilderness For something super chilled with a good groove
Luke Vibert – Stop The Panic – Think Hawaiian trip-hop, also from Ninja Tune. Very fun.

And a tune which really caught my attention
Nitin Sawhney – Shadowland - Feat. Ojos De Brujo – Sawhney with is usual Indian-chillout brilliance

Friday tunes | Issue 13

Access to new music’s been limited this week, so this one’s relatively short.

The Bees – (This Is For The) Better Days They’re getting quite a lot of my play-time at the moment. This is another great funk track. The album’s very varied, with sufficient Hammond to make it an excellent Friday choice and also including some good country and Lily Allen / Coral style brass-pop.

Angus & Julia Stone – Down the Way Definitely album of the week (thanks DB). I got stuck on “Yellow Brick Road”. Beautiful track.

And on a live music front, Ali Shaheed Muhammad of A Tribe Called Quest fame is playing at Plan B in Brixton tonight. Should be a good gig, tickets are £12 tops for late-comers.
So hard to pick an album of theirs to start on … hope you like this

Friday tunes | Issue 12

This week was time to get back in to some hip-hop. Check out their 2010 album, great for rolling through your Friday / general cotching

If you like that, also check out this compilation
The Groove Active – Sweet tracks = “Attica Black”, “State of Yo”, “Drop Da New Flavour” (jazzy)

I also discovered one of my fave / most played artists released some stuff last year which I'd missed. This is some electronic / DJ'd hip-hop / chillout
RJD2 – The Colossus – pretty eclectic mix of stuff. All great.
RJD2 – The Glow (Paolo remix) - a single they've just released from the album above

If you've not heard of them, and you're liking them, check these two albums!
RJD2 – Since We Last Spoke: Deluxe – “The Move” is a great track that I’ve not come across as I only had the plebby non-deluxe version of the album

Other stuff...

Wild Nothing – Gemini – Some more dreamy festival-esque music (cheers Swainey)
Nikki Yanofsky - a 16 year old Canadian jazz singer. She's pretty impressive. Very Diana Krall (cheers MM)

Also...
Massive Attack – Heligoland – This just keeps getting better every time I listen to it. Has to be one of the albums of 2010.

Chase & Status
For those that remember them in Emma bar, click on ...
For those who don’t, they're a London D&B act who have started doing some work with the likes of Plan B and Rihanna

Chase & Status – More Than A Lot – It Covers the spectrum of Drum & Bass pretty well
  • “Can’t Get Enough” nice bit of liquid DnB
  • “Against All Odds” is nice bit of Hip-Hop with Kano. Very Herbaliser
  • “Smash TV” is filth
  • “Pieces” with Plan B (a pleasant / calm intro. Don’t let it fool you. Sick track)
  • “Eastern Jam” cool vocals put in to dubstep. For those who have always wondered how to dance to tracks like this one, this parrot can teach you a thing or two
  • “Running” is fat / fatt / phat [delete where appropriate]
  • “Take You There” more liquid
  • “In Love” very Hospital Records / Jenna G – Your happier / bouncier variety

Pendulum – Immersion How did this one slip me by?

The Bees – Angryman Good funk from their first album

What I was listening to over Christmas

Christmas tunes

Wed 22/12/2010

Seeing as we’re all shooting off for Chrimbo this week, I thought I’d send these …

The Bees – Every Step's A Yes – reminds me of the Zutons and Van Morrison in parts
Common Sense – Resurrection (Grooveshark link) - I love this guy. Totally awesome old school jazzy hip-hop. Click on “Show More” at the bottom of the track list and start with Track 1 “Resurrection”
Common – Be – If you like it, here’s another

And because it’s Christmas, a track from another Boro boy to make it out of Teesside

And finally, why not

Friday tunes | Issue 10

Fri 17/12/2010

Two new albums for me this week
Deerhunter – Halcyon Digest – Good easy Friday listening band
Bombay Bicycle Club – Flaws – 2010 album. Lovely guitar and wailing vocals

Also, a newly discovered bonus track on ‘Sign No More’
Mumford & Sons – Hold On To What You Believe – the bonus CD’s also got a load of live tracks

And, a good track from the new MJ album, though I’m not convinced by most of the rest of it, quite schmaltzy

Catch-up for Dennis

Girl Talk – Loads of awesome mash-ups. You can download them free from their label’s website

Friday tunes | Issue 7

Thu 21/10/2010

Enjoyed some new stuff this week to the extent that it’s now been purchased. Check…

Fave tracks: ‘68 State’, ‘Hong Kong’, ‘Spitting Out The Demons’ and loads on the remix CD (but especially Stanton Warrior’s ‘Feel Good Inc’)

Fave tracks: ‘Pyro’ and ‘Beach Side’

Also, we’ve discovered an amazing music venue / pub in Tower Hill which has live music in the bar every Monday. Defos now in my top 5 places in London!

One of the bands we saw there played this…
Renato Carosone – Tu Vuò Fà L'Americano. It was brilliant. Ring any bells for anyone?

Friday tunes | Issue 6

Also, here’s in an absolutely brilliant music video from Hollerado. Very Ok Go.

Friday tunes | Issue 5

Fri 08/10/2010

Discovered these guys this week and totally loving their album

Some sniffs of…
  •         LCD Soundsystem goes Indie (tracks 1, 2 & 4)
  •         Arcade Fire (track 3)
  •         Springsteen (track 5)
  •         Muse (track 7)
  •         Dylan (track 8)

Also, there are a bunch of us going to see Mumford & Sons at the Hammersmith Apollo tonight. There may be two spare tickets, cost price of £23.75. Anyone interested?

Also also, I read this quote from Boris this morning as his part of his announcement of the one millionth Boris Bike journey

“A million thank yous go to Londoners for the warmth in which they have embraced our beautiful blue bikes. The zest in which people have taken to two wheels and joined the cycling revolution we are engendering in the Capital has gladdened my heart. Plus the doom mongers and naysayers who darkened my days with pre launch predictions of cycle hire woe have been vanquished.” I love him.

Friday tunes | Issue 4

Fri 24/09/2010

I’ve been listening to a 1997 Daft Punk set all day - very 90s.

Friday tunes | Issue 3

Fri 17/09/2010

This week, I have mostly been listening to…

In celebration of their new album release, listen to an old one. I got obsessed with “Length of Love”

Again, he’s just released a new album which I need to give a few more spins, but his first one is ridiculously good. Quite chilled.
Alternatively, if you need some bounce and/or grind in your Friday, start with this track on his 2006 album, Alternately Deep Roots Manuva – Double Drat

The Arcade Fire
You should all check their album out! I was listen to non-stop a couple of weeks before Muse. Turned back to it this week and I love it even more. It’s not on Spotify, but this Google Chrome collaboration is sweet if you’ve not already seen it…
