Friday tunes 33

New Playlist
Remembering Amy – Spotify’s memorial playlist
Top o' the Doves – It’s been a while since I spent some time listening to the Doves, turns out they’ve done some amazing stuff since my eye’s been off them! There were too many amazing tracks to list them individually … so here’s a playlist!

Single tracks (getting increasingly angrier)
Amy Winehouse – Someone To Watch Over Me - Demo – A great little jazzy standard
Passion Pit – Little Secrets – Enjoying this. Had a lot of airtime, very MGMT
Everything Everything – Photoshop Handsome – Love this track and his falsetto. They were great at Glasto
Wild Beasts – Reach A Bit Further – My stand-out track from their new album after the first spin + more falsetto
The Horrors – Dive In – Again, another stand-out from the first spin
Modjo – Lady (Hear Me Tonight) – Taking it back to the year 2000!
Fake Blood – I Think I Like It – Motown violin synth meets funky house
Danny Byrd Featuring Liquid – Sweet Harmony – More of my fave Hosptial style D&B from Danny Byrd
The Count – Elephant 1234 (Reset! remix) – Struggling to classify this one, though it’s quite funny to imagine a wide-boy elephant DJing it

Friday tunes 31 + BUG 26

Albums

Moby – Destroyed – Been wanting to give this a spin for a while. ‘After’ is the fave track so far
Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi – Rome – great new collaboration album from Danger Mouse, Daniele Luppi, Norah Jones and Jack White which I pick-up from BUG. Videos below. Loving ‘Season’s Trees’ and ‘Black’
Various Artists – Hospitality Drum & Bass 2011 – To help me come down from the festival partying. Stand-outs: ‘Dreams To Reality’, ‘Ill Behaviour’ and ‘Penamana’

Singles
Jill Scott – Le BOOM Vent Suite & Jill Scott – Rolling Hills – I have no idea how these two tracks passed me by on my first spin for her new album. They’re awesome!
Duane Eddy – Twango – Released version of the country star’s Django Reinhardt style gypsy jazz number

Tracks from BUG 26 at the BFI
1. Another amazing Google Chrome Project, though you may need some fancy add-in and a hyper graphics card for this Danger Mouse, Daniele Luppi, Norah Jones & Jack White collab to work properly.

Check here first for a music video that you control. If that fails, watch this YouTube one. You can see the cursor moving around. If you do it yourself, crazy things start happening as you navigate your way around the video

Commentary to how the video was made...

2. Gavin Friday - Able
Love this one, though maybe gones on a little too long for me

3. An awesome crowd sourced version of MJ's 'Behind The Mask'. What a tune!

4. This video from The Greeks is contro, but brilliant. Be warned! NOT a video for those with small children!

5. Cool atmospheric video from Memory Tapes

6. Increasingly biblical video from White Lies

7. A U2's one shot 'Numb' video taken in two shots

8. Cute track with a very tripy video from Chag VanGaalan

9. A witch hunt for Stargate's remix of Depeche Mode's 'Personal Jesus'

10. Lots of cubes and tunnel vision from Hooray for Earth

There was also an awesome video for Beardyman's 'Big Man', but it's nowhere to be found!

Congrats to Spotify!

After so much toil, Spotify finally announced it's launch in the US this morning. Congratulations to all involved, go take that nation by storm!

For those wanting more details, here's a couple of good articles I came across:

  • A quick overview with all the important bits from The Guardian. Love how Ek is positioned in the photo to look like the saviour of the industry. Intentional?
  • An excellent full account of the history of Spotify, some details on the technology behind the speed of the service (those clever techies clearly have their back ground in P2P) and today's US announcement from Bloomberg (not a short one, but a super read!)

Now, here's a lovely new album for you to listen to whilst you read
Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi – Rome

And for good measure, here's their US launch snippit...

Friday tunes 29 - the post-Glasto blog

After returning from Glastonbury last weekend, I'm bursting with musical excitement. This is me venting some of it. There will almost certainly be more to follow!

What I saw...

Glasto highlights
1. Apocalyptic raving under the flaming giant spider at Arcadia to the Stanton Warriors
2. Being at the front for Queens Of The Stone Age
3. Seeing how happy Elbow were to be playing the pyramid to a crowd who knew all their lyrics - 20 years in the making!
4. The utter filth that came out of the Dance Village. Thank you Trolley SnatchaNetskyNero, and Sub Focus. You all smashed it!
5. Boogying with topless mermaids, burlesque dancers and beat-boxers in Shangri-la
6. Whatever was coming out of the speakers in Sharky's at 6am on Saturday
7. Catching Radiohead as special guests
8. Watching the beauties that are Warpaint
9. The awesomeness of Coldplay live on a big stage. I've never seen anything so Yellow
10. Discovering Foster The People totally randomly
11. Listening to Tame Impala playing Angel
12 Friday morning of Metronomy and Two Door Cinema Club to lift everyone's spirits through the rain and on to people's shoulders
13. Watching Singai Shoniwa of the Noisettes climb the scaffolding, hanging from it and singing upside-down
14. Getting energised by Everything Everything
15. Silent disco!
16. Randomly bumping in to so many people I know!
17. Not going to bed before 3am
18. Camp Bistro morning tea - JIMP.
19. The Cider Bus
20. Burritos!

Albums
Fink – Perfect Darkness - The latest instalment for Ninja's atmospherically upbeat guy with guitar
London Afrobeat Collective – L.A.C - An awesome Glasto discovery who came on for the final two numbers of Bombay Bicycle Club. Loads of afro-style funk fun!
Erik Truffaz – Arkhangelsk - Intense electronic with some some tracks featuring the amazing Ed Harcourt (thanks Sam!)
Jill Scott – The Light Of The Sun - Bounding up to #1 in the US billboard. Treat yourself to some Funk & Soul. For those who don't know her, definitely check out this sexy little album - Jill Scott – Who Is Jill Scott?
